Old Painted Metal and Wood Braced Trunk Restoration- Albuquerque

Painted Wood and Metal Trunk Strip and Refinish

This old trunk had been in the Labbe family for many years and handed down through the generations from mother to daughter. Susie the current owner loved the chest, but hated the fact the chest had been painted white, especially as the paint had started to yellow over the course of time.

Bespoke Restoration’s first step in the restoration process was to test the paint for lead! Once the test proved negative, the arborous task of stripping the paint began.

Once all the paint was removed, the next task was to manufacture a new leather strap to replace the one that had been ripped off and was missing.  Furniture Medic by Bespoke Restoration cut a new strap of leather and aged the color appropriately to match the existing strap.

Finally, a satin clear coat was applied to the whole truck to protect the zinc metal and ash wood exterior. The stain finish really made the raw materials pop.

The Labbe’s were very pleased with the end result- below is the “Tell FM” review they provided following the return of the chest:

10/10

“We were so impressed with the professional way that Mark handled our order! He was so kind and was prompt in responding each time we communicated. The most amazing thing was the way our trunk turned out. It is absolutely beautiful. We will highly recommend this company and look forward to using you again!”

Antique English Furniture missing Arabesque scroll from cabinet top and broken Barley twist nesting table leg repair at Furniture Medic in Albuquerque

One of our military family customers recently moved back to Albuquerque after being stationed in England. During their deployment they purchased a number of Antique English Furniture pieces. During shipping some pieces suffered fairly severe damage, notably to their side cabinet that had the top broken in two pieces and the scroll detailing on the top of their cabinet broken off in several areas, with pieces missing. Also, their delicate barley twist leg nesting side table (part of a set of three) was broken in half through the middle of one of the table legs. Although this type of damage is very unfortunate it is also the most exciting wood furniture repair to work on! These very lovely and valuable pieces of furniture were repaired to our customer’s satisfaction.

Mark re-pieced the scroll work on the cabinet by gluing all pieces available and then made molds in order to recreate and replace the missing wood areas. Once all the pieces were back in place on the scroll detail he was able blend and color match the area and then put a finishing top coat.

Mark used a 2 part epoxy resin glue to put the scroll table leg back together so that the table would be strong enough to be weight bearing.  He then filled the join line using precision techniques to ensure the repair would be invisible to the eye.

By bringing life back to this damaged furniture Mark was really able to feel like a “furniture doctor” no pun intended!

Here is the “Tell FM” customer review from Brian and Angie:

10/10

Brian   & Angie The   repairs made to my English antique furniture are flawless. Mark took extreme   care to recreate the look of the original furniture. He is extremely talented   and professional and I will definitely use him again in the future.

Pine Dining Room Table Top Strip and Refinish following Windex Cleaner spill damage

Recently Mark stripped, color matched and refinished a pine dining room table for a customer following a spill of Windex Cleaner on the table top!

The Windex cleaner has ammonia in the product, which ate through the finish on the table top. As you can see from the photographs the damage was severe.  Mark completely stripped the table to bare wood then color matched, re-stained and final spray top coated the table with 6 layers of pre-catalyzed satin lacquer finish.

Here is the great review provided by Melissa and Fritz Blake on the “Tell Furniture Medic” Review Site:

“Dresser Drawer Road Damage” Restoration Albuquerque

Dresser Drawer Damage Repair – Nob Hill, Albuquerque, New Mexico

Recently a customer called with a dilemma. A favored family dresser was damaged during a move. Two of the drawers experience road rash with corners broken off and scraped. Both drawers also had long horizontal cracks through the entire length of the drawer fronts that needed to be first re-glued and then disguised via precision repair and color matching. The damaged corners needed to be reformed using epoxy putty and hand smoothed, then color blended to match the wood grain. The project was more of a skilled work of art than basic furniture repair.  The end result was very good and our customer Janice Honeycutt was very pleased: Here is the review write-up that she so kindly provided us through our review website “Tell FM”- 10/10.

Ms. Honeycutt-“My boys were moving my mom’s 60 year old pristine dresser. The drawers flew out around a corner and two drawers smashed on the road. The corners were GONE and jagged where they had crashed along the pavement and both drawers had a split all the way along the front. Mark at the Furniture Medic rebuilt the corners, fixed the splits and you cannot tell that they were damaged at all. My mother is blind, and while I can see that the drawers are fixed, she only feels the drawers, and they are smooth as when she bought the dresser. He matched the wood grain, noticed that the corners of the other drawers were a bit darker so made the corners darker. I couldn’t be happier with the end product.”

Take a look at the magnificent drawer precision repairs:

In home “on-site” dining table precision repair and refinishing in Albuquerque

Do you have a piece of furniture that is large? Furniture that is too big or heavy to easily take for repair or refinishing?

At Furniture Medic we come to your home or office! On many occasions we can set up the proper protective barrier to complete the work on-site.  If we are unable to make the repair in your home or office we will take care of the heavy lifting and bring the furniture back to our workshop for repair and/or refinishing.

Below is a wonderful example of an Onsite precision dining table repair and refinish.  The table had many stains and dark water spots from normal wear and tear over time and moisture damage to the wood. First the table was cleaned, sanded and repaired. The leaf section of the table needed to be strengthened by reinforcing the metal connections.  Finally the table was sprayed using an HPLV turbine spray gun with 2 layers of top coat finish to create durability for the coming years.

As can be seen in the photos, Mark was able to set-up a very effective plastic barrier in our customer’s home. The large majority of products we use are water-based products that are not toxic. If by chance the products being used give off an odor we have an air scrubber or buffer that can be used in our customer’s homes.

Our Customer was very satisfied with the results as well as the convenience of having the repair done in her home.  Here is the review Ms. Poroseva provided regarding what she liked best about our service- “Quality of work, final results, cleanest of the work site after the work was done, being on time, honesty about cost and efforts required, politeness and attitude. Very professional.” 10/10!

Circular Antique Table Water Damage Restoration- Albuquerque

This lovely round ornate table had significant water damage that caused a large white blotchy area on a significantly large section of the table top.  The customer was very fond of the table and wanted it restored to “like new” condition.

Mark was able to strip and refinish the table removing all of the moisture damage.  This stripping was particularly difficult in the very detailed carved sections on the edge of the table where all build up needed to be removed. Mark had to clean out each small grove. There was also a 2 inch gouge that required a precision burn in repair. Finally the table was color-matched, re-stained and given multiple top coats of finish to help prevent future damage.

Third Generation Child-sized Rocking Chair Restoration- Albuquerque

Rocking Chair Restoration- Albuquerque

Mark recently had the opportunity to restore the most adorable miniature rocking chair for one of our customer’s in Albuquerque.  It had been used for 2 generations and the family wanted to make it usable for their grandson.  Mark did a complete strip and refinished of the tiny rocking chair and reupholstered the seat.

Here is the review that our customer Mrs. Susan Kienzel provided:

“My husband’s old rocker that he used as a toddler and my sons used when they were little was just too ragged with no seat and unable to be used by my grandson. I found Furniture Medic by searching restoration websites, and I am happy I did. Mark refurbished this old rocker and brought the life right back into it. The chair is truly beautiful, and I can see my grandson enjoying it for many years to come.”

We appreciate Mrs. Kienzel’s wonderful feedback! Here are some before and after photos:
